The recent decision by the U.S. government to halt all development aid funding, as communicated by the Regional Delegate of Public Health for the Center Region of Cameroon, has led to the temporary suspension of the SAFECARE project. This project, which plays a crucial role in HIV response efforts through the SHWARI Health Association Cameroon (SHAC), has been abruptly put on hold since January 29, 2025.
In an official statement, the Regional Delegate expressed deep concern, stating that "this suspension, which takes effect from January 29, 2025, can only be lifted after new authorization from the U.S. executive." As a result, healthcare facilities and personnel previously engaged in SAFECARE will no longer be active on-site until further notice.

A Major Blow to Public Health and Economic Stability
The consequences of this suspension are far-reaching and devastating, affecting multiple aspects of life in Cameroon:
Health Crisis for Patients Living with HIVThousands of HIV-positive patients who rely on SAFECARE-supported services, including treatment, counseling, and follow-ups, are now at risk of treatment interruption, which can lead to drug resistance, complications, and increased mortality rates.
Massive Job LossesThe suspension has resulted in mass layoffs of healthcare personnel, community workers, and project staff who were part of SAFECARE. Many professionals who dedicated their careers to public health are now unemployed, worsening the already critical unemployment rate in Cameroon.
Economic Consequences for CameroonThe SAFECARE project pumped millions of francs CFA into Cameroon’s healthcare system, benefiting local businesses, service providers, and the general economy. Its suspension will result in a loss of funding, a decline in healthcare quality, and a possible increase in medical expenses for patients.
Urgent Call to Action: The Cameroonian Government Must Step In
This crisis demands immediate action from the Cameroonian government. We call on authorities to:
✅ Find alternative funding sources to sustain HIV/AIDS programs and ensure continued access to essential care.
✅ Engage in diplomatic negotiations with the U.S. government to reinstate funding.
✅ Implement emergency support programs for affected healthcare workers and patients.
The SAFECARE project is not just about healthcare; it is about saving lives, preserving livelihoods, and protecting the future of Cameroon. The government must act now before the situation worsens!
